The consistent, enduring presence of a caring adult in a young person’s life can be the difference between staying in school or dropping out, making healthy decisions or engaging in risky behaviors, and realizing one’s potential or failing to achieve one’s dreams.

Cheryl, through the support of Big Brothers Big Sisters, created that change in Destiny.

Destiny struggled with depression, reading, social interactions and loneliness during her formative years. Toinette was a busy single mom, balancing between a full-time job and caring for Destiny and her younger sister with a disability. Wanting more for her daughter, she reached out to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Destiny was matched with her new Big Sister Cheryl, and her whole world changed.

Celebrating eight years of friendship, Cheryl & Destiny have enjoyed going to the library, museums, visiting the zoo, horseback riding and exploring nature. Destiny even got a lesson in civic duty when she joined Cheryl at the voting booth for the 2008 and 2012 elections.
